Weekend Trip

Alternative Weekend Breaks are short, immersive volunteer experiences for students that would like to join the AB movement but are unable to commit to a weeklong AFB or ASB trip for whatever reason. AWB is a great way to get involved in a community local to SLC, UT around important social and environmental issues for a weekend. Trips depart at 4:45pm on Friday and return to campus early Sunday evening.

AWB Registration for Fall 2017 is open! Register today as these trip spots will fill on a first-come, first-served basis. AWB Spring 2018 registration will open on September 30, 2017.

AWB Fall 2017 - Refugee and Human Rights

This trip addresses the complex and intersecting unmet needs around refugee and human rights. Specific consideration is given to supporting hte basic human rights of refugees, asylum seekers, and displaced persons in the Salt Lake Valley through volunteer work with community organizations.

Location: Salt Lake City, Utah

Dates: October 20-22, 2017

Cost: $50 (Cost is all-inclusive and covers lodging, transportation, food, and volunteer experiences). At the time of registration, you will pay $100; however, after you complete your AWB trip you will be refunded $50. It is important to do your best to participate in the AWB experience if you register as dropping from the program past the drop-date deadline will disrupt commitments to community partner organizations and pose challenges to the AB team experience.

 

AWB Spring 2017 - School-to-Prison Pipeline

This trip focuses on a growing national problem, from the classroom to the courtroom, the School-to-Prison pipeline is a systemic problem involving policies commonly utilized in schools across the nation that favor incarceration over education and disporportionalty affect racial minorties and children with disabilities. The aims of this trip is to explore the existence and perpetuation of this pipeline through collaboration with community organizations and education around around the public school system, the juvenile justice system, intergenerational incarceration, and poverty.

Location: TBA, Utah

Dates: March 2-4, 2018

Cost: $50 (Cost is all-inclusive and covers lodging, transportation, food, and volunteer experiences). AWB Spring 2018 - Environmental Stewardship

This trip will partner with the University of Utah's Bonderman Field Station at Rio Mesa is located Southeastern Utah along three miles of the Dolores River. The Bonderman Field Station will provide a unique learning experience to students as they engage in multidisciplinary education about ecology and the environment, human-environment interaction, or sustainable living on the Colorado Plateau. In following the theme of environmental stewardship and adhering to themes of the Bonderman Field Station, students will participate in a weekend-long excursion exploring the importance of water in the West, the human history, art and biology of the Colorado Plateau and a larger understanding of the solitude and inspiration within such a complex and fragile locale.

Location: Near Moab, UT.

Dates: March 30 - April 1, 2018

Alternative Weekend Break trips fill on a first-come, first-served basis.  To reserve your seat on a trip, you must go online to the Alternative Break Umarket Store and purchase a non-refundable, $50 trip payment for the AWB trip you wish to attend. This $50 trip payment covers your lodging, food, and transportation during the weekend experience.

If the trip you are interested in is not listed as a down payment option, it is full. Please choose the waiting list option and continue the checkout process to be added to the general waiting list. Note your preference(s) in the section at the bottom of the form. There is no charge for being on the waiting list. Please note: if you are placed on a trip from the waiting list, your trip selection will be final.
