Saturday Service Project:

Environment & Sustainability

April 15th - 9:00 am to 12:30 pm


Registration is required for all projects

  • There are a limited number of spots available for each project - first come, first served
  • Unless otherwise indicated on the project description, all projects will take place from 9:00 am - 12:30 pm
  • Transportation is NOT provided to the projects
  • If you are participating with a group, everyone must sign up individually
  • Some projects may require volunteers to wear face masks
  • If you feel ill or have symptoms you will be asked to stay home

STEP 1: Choose your Volunteer Project


Location: TBD

Volunteer Spots: 15 total

Description:Cleaning collected mascara and cosmetic wands for Wands for Wildlife.

Age Requirement: Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age



Location:1635 E Campus Center Dr, Business Classroom, Room 50

Volunteer Spots: 40 total

Description:  General garden maintenance and preparation

Age Requirement: Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age


 


Location: TBD

Volunteer Spots: 50 total

Description: Plant trees and participate in tree education

Age Requirement: Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age



Location: TBD (this project will take place at one of the gardens in our Back-Farms program. These gardens are located in the backyards of our senior citizens participants. 

Volunteer Spots: 15 total

Description: Prepare a garden for spring planting. The tasks will include removing old vegetation, weeding, mixing in soil amendments and/or compost, using hand tools to aerate the soil, repairing drip irrigation, and sowing seeds of spring crops.

Age Requirement: Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age

Volunteer Spots: 20 total

Description: Volunteers will be shoveling compost mulch into wheel-barrows and taking them to either an exhibit or garden bed to reinvigorate the substrate.

All volunteers should bring a water bottle and wear close-toed shoes they are alright getting dirty. If there are thunderstorms, we will cancel. Rain and snow will most likely not affect the volunteer project so volunteers should also prepare for that case and dress accordingly.

Volunteers are welcome to stay as guests after the service project is complete.

Volunteer Spots: 24 total

Description: Maintenance and improvement of nature-based outdoor classroom for young children. At Wonderbloom, we are raising stewards of the planet. We're helping the next generation of children feel connected to the earth and inspiring them to care for our planet. Volunteers would help us 1) shovel and replenish wood chips, gravel, or dirt. 2) Treat or seal wood on playground, fences, or furniture. 3) Plant trees, flowers, or bushes. 4) Install borders with logs, pavers, branches, or plastic edging. 5) Hang shade sails

Age Requirement: Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age



Location: 2700 E 3000 S, Salt Lake City, UT 84109

Volunteer Spots: 20 total

Description: Last year we remodled the garden location and built garden boxes to combat the rocky soil. We are needing extra assistance to finish leveling pathways and laying down weed cloth over the pathways to combat the weed pressure at that garden. We are also needing some assistance with general garden tidying and fix-up, such as painting chairs, building a trellis for blackberries, adding stain to protect the garden boxes.

Age Requirement: Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age

  • After you register, you'll be contacted with additional instructions in the 2 weeks leading up to the event

STEP 3: Consider this additional project the following Saturday, April 22nd

Jordan River Cleanup on Earth Day

Location: Jordan Park 1040 S. 900 W

Volunteer Spots: 100 total

Description: Beautifying the Jordan River Corridor and making the river and trail more useable and enjoyable for the whole community. You'll be walking the river trail and river bank areas with a group of folks to remove litter from the land and water, trimming back low hanging tree/bush branches, and clearing debris off the trail. This event is on Saturday April 22nd from 8am-12pm. 

Age Requirement: Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age


To register to attend this event, please make sure to do the following:

  1. Register to attend on the Salt Lake City Public Lands website
  2. "Sign up" by completing their online form
  3. Please enter your UNID email (ex: u0000000@utah.edu)
  4. Under "Connections", select "Bennion Center" from the dropdown list
