Alternative Breaks Site Leaders

Well before the tires hit the road on Alternative Breaks, our incredible team of student Site Leaders are carefully crafting the transformative experiences that U of U students enjoy each year. These daring darlings of social change coordinate the community engagement, cultural immersion, issue education, and reflection pieces on their Alternative Breaks experiences, and they'd love to share their enthusiasm for their work with you. Reach out to them if you have any questions about the experiences they're planning!

Amy Nguyen

Hey, y'all! My name is Amy and I am finally a senior majoring in Health, Society and Policy. My first experience was the Marine Conservation trip and that sparked my passion for Alt Breaks. Since then, I've led the HIV/AIDS and Community Health experiences. I've loved being able to meet new people and learn about justice from different communities, and I'm excited to continue my journey in Alt Breaks as the Chair of the program. In my free time, I binge watch Netflix and occasionally hit up Tea Bar.

Howdy y'all, my name is Carlos Eduardo Rodriguez Jr. and I am a fourth-year student studying Chemistry with an emphasis in Materials Science & Engineering at the University of Utah. This year I will serve as the Chair Elect for the Alternative Breaks program and lead the Hunger & Food Justice AB in Seattle, WA. I'm looking forward to leading this trip because it is a combination of my interests in sustainability, social justice, and food. A fun fact about me is that I hate bugs unless they're Gucci.

Hello! I'm Erika and I'm a senior studying Social Work. I love Alternative Breaks, and I am so excited to lead the HIV & AIDS experience this spring! I look forward to exploring how systemic barriers perpetuate HIV, how HIV/AIDS greatly affects margninalized communities, and how harm reduction models can play a large role in the solution. Some fun facts about me are that I am OBSESSED with major league baseball (go Angels!) and I love spending time with my dog and my two cockatiels. Let's just say that my apartment currently has more animals than it has people.

Hello! I'm here because I haven't found any community at the U that I love quite as much as Alternative Breaks! It won't take you long to figure out I'm from Idaho (and not just because I love potatoes). I'm a junior this year studying Political Science with a certificate in Quantitative Analysis. I love sunny weather, practicing yoga, Marvel movies, and connecting with new people.

There are so many different opportunities to give back to the community, and the Alt Breaks team is passionate about a broad range of issues. I'm excited to be leading the Immigration trip, as I am an immigrant myself. I was born in India but grew up in the States, so I look forward to helping others transition to life in America.

Hey, everyone! My name is Ahmed and I'm majoring in Psychology Premed. I am super excited to be leading the Wildlife Habitat Conservation trip this fall! I am really excited to meet a new group of people and help them experience what Alternative Breaks are all about. I also can’t wait to learn more about how to preserve and protect natural habitats. I am super easy going so let me know if you need any help!

I’m excited to be a Site Leader with AB for the 2nd time to provide students with an experience that will impact them for their entire lives! I want to explore Hunger and poverty as it relates to the lives of children. Specifically how it affects their development and contributes to future disparities in their lives (intergenerational poverty) compared to those who do not experience hunger to the same degree. Quirky fact- I’ve watched Disney Pixar’s Coco more than 30x! (I stopped counting)

Hi! I'm a third year student majoring in Health, Society, and Policy with minors in Integrative Human Biology and French. I am super excited to be leading the Refugee Rights & Resettlement trip. Refugees have been a part of our community for decades, but not many people are aware of the different aspects of the resettlement process and the considerable impact they have on our society. I am looking forward to engaging in activities that teach students to see refugees in a new light. I like gummy snacks, reading relatable quotes, watching movies, and Timothée Chalamet.

Hi! My name is Rylie and I just recently changed my major to Environmental Studies with an emphasis in Air, Water, and Health. I am so excited to be leading the Urban Environmentalism trip to Portland because it combines both social and environmental justice, both of which I have been incredibly passionate about since starting at the U. I love anything outdoorsy or artsy, can say the alphabet backwards (sometimes faster than forwards), and I can't wait to meet those who decide to join me on this trip!
