April Saturday Service Project: Environmental Sustainability

**Important Information Regarding SLC Marathon Road Closures**

This event takes place the same day as the Salt Lake City Marathon. Please review the road closure map. Depending on where you live you may need to plan an alternate route to your project. Click here to see a Google map of project locations.

This project is a Comcast Cares Day project, so the Bennion Center will receive a financial contribution in the form of a Thank You Comcast Foundation grant which can be used for future community improvement projects. Volunteers also receive a free breakfast (donuts) and lunch (pizza).

Project Options

Project options are listed below. Most projects are kid friendly unless otherwise specified. If you have any questions, please contact Eric.Nhem@utah.edu or (801) 585-1508.

About: Volunteers will take recycled plastic bags and turn them into sleeping mats for people experiencing homelessness.

Address: Bennion Center (Ray A. Olpin Union, 200 Central Campus Drive, Room 101, Salt Lake City, UT 84112)

Age requirements: All ages welcome!

Other notes: Feel free to bring any plastic grocery bags of your own if you have them.

About: Volunteers will help with one of two projects:

  • Outdoors: Learning sustainable composting techniques, picking up trash, pruning and doing a spring cleaning of the ground with some planting included.
  • Indoors: Updates on the building and new sustainable power system, followed by cleaning and restoring parts of the old church building. Volunteers will also prep walls and rooms for drywall, mud work, and primer.*

Age requirements: Anyone 17 and under must have a designated chaperone or guardian.

Other notes: *Volunteers participating in the indoor project must text “Liability” to 801-788-4171 to fill out a form from an automated link.

About: Volunteers will be seeding pea beds.

Other notes: Volunteers should bring their own water bottles.

About: Volunteers will assist in packing food to be distributed across Salt Lake.

Address: Peterson Heritage Center (151 S Connor St, Salt Lake City, UT 84102)

Age requirements: Volunteers must be 17 years or older.

Other notes: Please wear closed-toe shoes.

About: Volunteers will help prepare gardens for planting. Tasks will include hauling compost, digging beds, raking, and broad forking.

About: Volunteers will build garden boxes.

Age requirements: All ages welcome.

About: Volunteers will prepare garden beds for the summer.

Address: 800 Central Valley Road, South Salt Lake, UT 84119

Age requirements: Must be 18 years or older.

Other notes: Volunteers should bring their own water bottles.


Time: 9:30 am – 12:00 pm Please note the time difference in relation to the other projects!

About: Volunteers will participate in a friendly competition with other groups to pull invasive plants known as myrtle spurge to prevent them from overrunning native species.

Address: Memory Grove (300 N Canyon Rd, Salt Lake City, UT 84103) – Volunteers will take a 10-15 minute hike up to the actual site. An event staff member will wait for volunteers at the base to take them up.

Age requirements: Prohibited to ages 12 and under. Anyone under 18 must have a chaperone or guardian.

Other notes: Volunteers must wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and closed-toe shoes. Work will be active, so please bring water bottles, as well. Bring shovels if you have one (if not the Bennion Center can provide).

About: Volunteers will help with mulching, weeding, and bulb de-heading.

Age requirements: Must be 18 years or older.

Other notes: Volunteers should wear long pants and closed-toe shoes. Long-sleeved shirts are also recommended but not required.

About: Volunteers will primarily help with picking up trash, along with other projects as needed.

Age requirements: All ages welcome!

Other notes: Volunteers should meet at the volunteer tent to receive assignments. Volunteers should bring water bottles.
