As we charge full-steam ahead into the second semester of the year, many students are starting to think about their future plans. Where will you live next semester? Will you work over the summer? How will you make your experience at the U unique and exciting? At the Bennion Center, students will choose to answer these questions through service and leadership.
The Bennion Center offers many opportunities for any University of Utah students to get involved and take their interests and passions in service to next level. Currently, the Bennion Center has about 110 student leaders, and approximately 100 of those positions will be opening this semester as students graduate from either their program or the university.
Students who apply to be leaders in the Bennion Center can anticipate working with a specific organization or program within the Bennion Center, and recruiting volunteers, serving as a liaison between the Bennion Center and the U’s campus and their chosen organization. Students will work about 5-10 hours a week, and some of that work may also include event planning, tabling for events, and holding an office hour. You can read more about the specific programs and organizations for leadership here.
There are options for leadership for all students, but some positions may require specific prior experience; for example, to be an alternative break leader, you need to have already completed an alternative break.
Additionally, if you are looking for somewhere on campus to live, the Bennion Service House will have more spots available for the 2018-2019 school year, learn more here.
Students that choose to apply will be asked to apply to up to three different leadership positions. Next, students will be asked to submit a resume, a cover letter, and references. Finally, students will be interviewed for their chosen positions.
There will be two rounds of applications, the first round is for more specific and specialized positions, such as the alternative break chair, scholars, utah reads, service house residence. This first round of applications is open from now until February 16, and these positions mostly involve managing other students. Learn more/apply here:
The second round of positions contains a greater number of positions available. This second round will include student directed positions, and communications positions.
If you are chosen for a leadership position, you will work from May 1, 2018 - April 30, 2019; however, not all programs or positions are run over the summer.
If you would like to learn more about these leadership positions, attend one of the Bennion Center’s information sessions on February 28th from 11am-12, or March 1st from 1-2pm, both will be held in the Bennion Center.
