Community Engaged Faculty Programs

Faculty Fellows:

The Faculty Fellows Program is designed to support engaged scholars at the University of Utah.  The program provides faculty with the opportunity to (1) design (or add) service-learning for a new or existing course and/or (2) a community-based research project - in collaboration with a group of peer faculty and with support from the Bennion Center.

Up to ten Faculty Fellows are selected each year.  Fellows serve one-year terms in which they will receive training in engaged scholarship pedagogies through panels, workshops, and conferences as well as one-on-one faculty mentorship and collegial support.  Faculty Fellows receive $500 in their development accounts, and upon completion of the program, will become Bennion Center Affiliated Faculty. Where possible, Faculty Fellows are paired with Bennion Center Affiliated Faculty who can assist and support the development of a service-learning course or community-based research project.

Faculty Affiliates:

Faculty at the University of Utah can choose to affiliate with the Bennion Center.  Any faculty member that has demonstrated a commitment to community engagement and engaged scholarship is eligible for affiliation.  Typically this requires at least one year of experience in some combination of the following:

  • Service-Learning
  • Practice Based Learning & Research
  • Community Based Learning & Research
  • Participatory Community Based Research
  • Curricular Research
  • Faculty Service & Outreach

Bennion Center Affiliated Faculty form an advisory body to shape the face of community engagement at the university and guide Faculty Fellows through their year-long term.  Affiliated Faculty are given the opportunity to seek out and share internal and external funding opportunities for engaged scholarship within a collegial environment steeped in Community Engagement.  Members may be asked to mentor a Faculty Fellow for a year and contribute their expertise to Bennion Center panels and workshops.  Typically, those members not directly involved with the Faculty Fellows Program meet only once each semester, while those that wish to be actively engaged with the Bennion Center have many opportunities to do so. Affiliated Faculty will be eligible for awards and grants through the Bennion Center.
