400 Hours of Service
Each scholar performs a minimum of 400 hours of community service, which is documented each month online. In addition to tracking hours, each scholar completes 8 reflective pieces (journal, project or paper). The Tracking Forms and reflection pieces are to be turned in to the Scholars Coordinator each month to become a part of your file.
Criteria for Service Hours
- Service hours must meet a recognized community need through a non-profit agency or group, provide service to the University community, or assist an individual person in need.
- Service activities can include, but are not limited to, direct service, advocacy, public policy development, community organizing, or other activities that meet the learning goals identified by the scholar. Service hours benefiting a religion, fraternal organization, or political party are encouraged but will not count toward this requirement.
- Time spent on an Integrative Service Project will count towards the completion of the required 400 hours of service.
- Service must be performed without an hourly wage. Service supported through grants, work-study, stipends, and / or scholarships is not generally accepted. Occasionally service that is compensated can be accepted. If you have a question about this please contact the Scholars Coordinator.
- Service must be performed without receiving academic credit. Teaching Assistant hours will not count either.
- If a scholar fails to complete and submit a reflection for two semesters in a row, they will be dropped from the program.
Documentation and Reflection for 400 hours
Each month, Scholars must complete and submit their hours online for the Scholars Coordinator to view. Hours are tracked each month on the 10th of the following month. January hours are due February 10th, February hours are due March 10th and so on.
Summer hours are May, June, July and August. –One submission, one verification, one reflection.
Verification for your hours is required for each semester. This can be an email, letter, or phone call from the Community Partner you have done the most amount of service with.
Prior Service Experience
Up to 100 hours of community service completed prior to enrolling in the Program can be counted toward the total of 400.
