Saturday, February 25: Take the Challenge and participate or volunteer in the American Lung Association's Annual Fight For Air Climb. Race, run or walk up the 598 steps of the Wells Fargo Center Tower. Whether you do it in honor of a loved one with lung disease, or just to take the challenge, you will walk away with a new-found respect for your lungs. Saturday, February 25, 2012: The American Diabetes Association needs your help with the largest health fair of its kind in Utah dedicated to diabetes, healthy eating and active living. There are volunteer opportunities in all areas of the event, for example: admission, bookstore, information booth, registration, volunteer check in and Youthzone. Saturday, March 31: REI is pleased to sponsor the Bend-in-the-River Spring Clean-Up which will take place on March 31, 2012. The Bend-in-the-River is an urban greenspace located in the heart of Salt Lake City along the Jordan River parkway. This greenspace serves as a central location for community education on native vegetation and ecology, while simultaneously providing a venue to keep Salt Lake’s urban community connected to its environment. The Bennion Community Service Center at the University of Utah partners year-round with Parks and Public Lands Division and REI in stewardship of the site, and we invite you out for a fun and educational day of giving back to our environment in celebration of this national holiday. We need your on March 31st to prepare the site for the spring planting season! Volunteers simply show up, Saturday, March 31, 2012 from 9:00 am – 12:00 pm at Bend-in-the-River (1030 W Fremont Ave, SLC).

June 30 -July 7: Bennion Center Costa Rica Service Trip. This program aims to give participants the chance to serve in a rural area in Costa Rica. Participants will be exposed to eco-tourism, agro-ecology, community development, women in development, fair trade agriculture and lots of fun! Family and friends are invited. There is no age limit. Ongoing Volunteer Opportunities
Want to make a difference in someone’s life? Please share your language skills as an interpreter for the Maliheh Free Clinic. The Clinic provides free medical care to the uninsured and working poor in the greater Salt Lake area. Our patients are living below 150% of federal poverty guidelines, and do not qualify for Medicare, Medicaid, CHIP, or other health care resources. Our patient population includes 45% Hispanic, 20% Pacific Islander, 20% Caucasian, and 15% representing other ethnic groups. Interpreters are always in demand, and perform a valuable service in insuring that our patients are receiving accurate and understandable information about their health care needs and concerns. 2012 Utah Pride Festival Leadership Volunteers are the backbone of the Utah Pride Festival. It will take over 1,000 volunteers to staff this year's festival, including over 100 volunteer leaders to complete our 2012 Festival planning committee. We are currently seeking volunteers to assist in a number of leadership roles which are instrumental in coordinating all aspects of the Utah Pride Festival, including food, logistics, entertainment and more. Applicants should have previous volunteer, management or logistical experience. Leadership positions require the attendance of two Wednesday evenings a month (February to June) and full-time participation during the Festival (June 1 - 3, 2012). This is a great way to make new friends and a great opportunity to get hands-on festival coordinating experience. 21 years old and above preferred but 18 and above with previous management and volunteer experience will be considered. North Star Elementary is looking for individuals that would like to come read with students. The volunteers will participate in the S.T.A.R.S. program (Student Tutoring Achievement for Reading). Make your 2012 New Year’s resolution to help the children of Guadalupe School!Reading tutors are needed for Tuesdays and/or Thursdays from 3:15-4:15 for the remainder of the school year. Volunteers will have the opportunity to tutor and read one-on-one with our 3rd grade struggling readers. Each volunteer session will consist of two ½ hour sessions with two different children for a total of one hour per visit. Volunteering once per week would be fantastic, and twice a week – even better! A two hour training will be provided by Guadalupe School. Family home help. Young couple with two teen-age boys who have Muscular Dystrophy need some regular help at least an hour once or twice a week getting the boys out of their motorized wheel chairs and into bed - just to take some of the pressure off this young couple. There is a ceiling track system to help the process. Last year two young men helped them on a regular basis (trading off) and really almost became a part of the family. The boys liked having a couple of big brothers and the parents appreciated the assistance and a little bit of a break. The Community Food Co-op needs volunteers to help with a number of different activities/initiatives. We need help taking monthly co-op orders or other office work, handing out flyers or door hangers, warehouse work, helping us set up and run our weekly market sales, delivering food to homebound individuals, doing outreach at events and helping on distribution day. The University of Utah Women’s Club is a nonprofit organization operated exclusively for charitable, cultural and educational purposes. Its programs and activities bring together women with diverse interests and diverse roles in the University community to promote interest in and support for the University of Utah. The club offers scholarships to full-time upper-level undergraduate women studying at the University. The UUWC is the oldest organization on campus-it began in 1909, Jane Kingsbury as president. We celebrated 100 years in 2009. Since 1983, approximately 220 scholarships have been awarded to women. We have been doing an oral history project on our past presidents, board members and current members-most are 90 years old. Each member was videotaped, we have still pictures and “fact sheets” from their interviews. We are looking for volunteers to help transcribe the interviews and possibly editing video. Utahns Against Homelessness seeks an Outreach Coordinator to coordinate UAH’s community outreach, which is primarily focused on federal nutrition programs. This will include working with partnering state and non-profit agencies to write and submit a state-wide food stamp outreach plan, as well as forging relationships with Salt Lake School District’s Community Learning Centers, working with emergency food pantries on mobile food stamp screening and enrollment; training community partner agencies and volunteers on food stamp eligibility, screening, and enrollment. The Outreach Coordinator will also share duties with the Executive Director and Associate Director for facilitating presentations in the community about poverty and federal nutrition programs. Camp Hobé, Utah's summer camp for children with cancer and their siblings, is currently recruiting forvolunteers for the summer 2012 camp. Since 1977, Splore has been helping people with disabilities or disadvantages overcome barriers to outdoor recreation. Splore’s goal is to create more inclusive communities by introducing people to the healing powers of outdoor recreation while fostering a connection with Utah’s wildlands. Splore needs volunteers to assist on trips, at special events and during summer camps. Trip Volunteers assist on activities including white water river rafting in Moab, canoeing along the Jordan River, rock climbing and nature interpretation up Big Cottonwood Canyon, and nordic skiing in the Wasatch. Special Event Volunteers assist at fundraising and outreach events. Summer Camp Volunteers act as counselors and activity leaders for week long summer camps for children with disabilities.
